RE: Saint Charles Lenten Appeal

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

What will you give up this year? That is often the question asked of us as we enter the Lenten Season. Last year I spoke about how as children we were given Mite boxes at Lent. We were to fill them with the coins we were not spending on the candy which we gave up for Lent.

While I no longer have Mite boxes, I still manage to adhere to the concept. Every night I place the change from my pockets in a bank on my dresser. At year end, I am always amazed at how much I saved; at times nearly $200.00. This means I average $.54 a day. If we all did this for the forty days of Lent each of us could save roughly $21.40. This may not sound like much, but multiply this by everyone in our CACINA family and it becomes a tidy sum. Now, why am I telling you this story?

The St. Charles Lenten Appeal was established by the House of Delegates as a way to provide funds to the National Church to support parishes and individuals in need, as well provide needed scholarship assistance to lay or clergy to attend General Assembly. In 2010, the fund spent $1,140 to provide GA scholarships. The need for such help can only grow given the continued state of the economy.

The suggested method for soliciting funds for the Appeal is for each parish take up a second collection during one Lenten Sunday. However, I urge each community to establish a Lenten giving practice which best suits the parish. Remember my example, no matter how little it might seem at the time, the spare change adds up! And, I am confident that we will continue to make the Saint Charles Lenten Appeal a success.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving me all that I have. Bless these Mites that I give back to you so that they can be used to spread the good news of Jesus’ love here and throughout the world. Amen.

Sincerely yours,

Your Brother in Christ
